Ramnarine-Rieks. This talk provides an inside look at creating a digital collection. As this was an online, asynchronous class, I recorded my presentation as a YouTube video. It includes some discussion of the technical underpinnings of the Omeka site I&#8217;ve created for Vassar&#8217;s collection of historic clothing, including slides that show my customizations in PHP for showing related items.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vYTggDBqBgQ?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>These slides are also online at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/ardenkirkland\/kirkland-ist676-nomovies\">http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/ardenkirkland\/kirkland-ist676-nomovies<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This presentation builds on several that I did in the spring of 2014, starting with &#8220;One of Many Small Collections,&#8221; part of a panel for the annual symposium for the Costume Society of America (at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ardenkirkland.com\/work\/portfolio\/one-of-many-small-collections\/\">http:\/\/www.ardenkirkland.com\/work\/portfolio\/one-of-many-small-collections\/<\/a>). I then\u00a0adapted that for a presentation at the Bard Graduate Center for the NYC Digital Humanities Omeka Users Group, &#8220;Representing Material Culture Online: Historic Clothing in Omeka,&#8221; which added more technical detail (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ardenkirkland.com\/work\/portfolio\/representing-material-culture-online\/\">http:\/\/www.ardenkirkland.com\/work\/portfolio\/representing-material-culture-online\/<\/a>). &#8220;Inside a Digital Collection&#8221; was then further adapted as a case study for an audience of library students.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In July of 2014, I was invited to present a guest lecture for Foundations of Digital Data (IST676) at the Syracuse University School of Information Studies, taught by Angela U.
