ArtOneida is a celebration of public artwork throughout Oneida County in New York State. As Digital Project Manager, I have worked with Archivist-in-Residence Marc-Anthony Polizzi to research public artwork all across the county for inclusion in an online archive and a commemorative book. This project is sponsored by Sculpture Space, in Utica, NY, as a part of their 40th anniversary, with funding from the Oneida County Partners in Prosperity Initiative.

For this project I have developed a responsive website using the Omeka content management system. The custom design is undergoing changes simultaneously with the book, and incorporates navigation, search, and sort functionality relevant to the specific subject of public art and to the specific region. I began by developing a metadata profile to incorporate VRA core standard metadata elements but also added elements specific to the subject and region. I developed controlled vocabularies using terms from the Getty Art and Architecture Thesaurus and Thesaurus of Geographic Names. Subject terms are taken from the Library of Congress Subject Headings, identified using the searchFAST tool. Conceived as a “field guide” to local public art, an interactive map is also an important part of the site, and we have been carefully collecting and plotting GPS coordinates.
I have led an active social media component of the project throughout much of the process, sharing images and links to existing information about artwork as we find it, and soliciting public help to find out more about mystery works. Along with an intern I have posted regularly on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest.
Data management has been carefully considered for this project, including guides to the formatting of data, a monitored workflow for image and metadata processing among team members, a regular backup schedule, shared cloud storage for team collaboration, and plans to consider depositing the data in additional repositories at the end of the grant period.
